How to Optimize Windows 11 for Speed

ikona

Over time Windows 11 becomes slower: programs install themselves in the background, unnecessary processes load and disks fill up. Most of these problems can be solved without installing additional "boosters", which often do more harm than good. In this guide we look at measures that really affect system speed.

Ctrl + Shift + Esc # opening Task Manager

Startup Programs

The biggest impact on perceived slowness comes from programs that start together with Windows. Each of them delays startup and runs in the background. The setting is found in Task Manager on the Startup tab, where unnecessary programs can be disabled.

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
  2. Switch to the Startup apps tab.
  3. Right-click the program → Disable.

Free Disk Space

A full disk slows down the entire system, because Windows needs room for the swap file and temporary data. At least 10–15 % of free space on the system drive is recommended. Unnecessary files can be deleted with Disk Cleanup or through Settings → System → Storage.

Visual Effects

Animations and transparency look nice, but on weaker computers they visibly eat performance. The easiest way to reduce them: Windows key + R, type sysdm.cpl, Advanced tab → Performance → Settings and select "Adjust for best performance".

Fast Startup and Restarts

Fast Startup can cause strange system behaviour over time. If the computer acts sluggish, try disabling it in Settings → System → Power. An occasional full restart helps too, since fast startup means a hybrid state, not a true shutdown.

Updates and Drivers

Outdated drivers — especially graphics drivers — are a common cause of stuttering. Windows Update installs driver updates under Advanced options. Special driver updater programs are not recommended, as they install wrong or unnecessary versions.

Background Apps and Notifications

Many programs check for news, updates and notifications in the background without being needed. In Settings → Apps → Installed apps, background execution can be disabled for each program. This helps the most with store apps that are rarely used.

Disk and Malware Checks

A sudden drop in speed without an obvious reason can signal disk failure or infection. The built-in Windows Security tool checks the system, while chkdsk checks the disks. Run the command as administrator.

chkdsk C: /f # checks and repairs errors on drive C

What to Avoid

The internet is full of "optimizers" promising miracles. In reality most of these programs only sell a feeling of speed while installing extra software or even spyware in the background. Windows already has all the necessary tools built in — you just need to know them.

Computer speed does not depend on a single measure, but on habits: regularly deleting unnecessary files, moderate installations, a reasonable number of startup programs and an updated system.
