During a fresh Windows 11 installation, you may see backup options even if you never created any. These are not manual backups — they are automatic system data generated by Windows and OneDrive. You can safely delete them.
1. Delete System Restore points
Windows creates restore points automatically, and they appear as backup options.
- Open Start
- Type System Restore
- Select Configure
- Click Delete
2. Delete File History copies
File History may activate automatically if a drive was previously connected.
- Open File History
- Select Advanced settings
- Click Clean up versions
3. Disable and clear OneDrive backup suggestions
Windows may offer OneDrive restore options even after brief sync usage.
- Open OneDrive
- Settings → Sync and backup
- Click Stop backup
- Optionally delete synced folders in OneDrive
4. Delete previous installations (Windows.old)
If Windows was installed before, Windows.old may appear as a restore source.
- Open Disk Cleanup
- Click Clean up system files
- Select Previous Windows installation(s)
